Product Insights
The Lyker Shirt Yl from ET AL is a design-led linen shirt that prioritizes movement and breathability through a bias-cut yoke, providing diagonal shoulder stretch without elastane while maintaining a tailored drape. The linen's hollow fibers channel air and wick sweat, it is hypoallergenic and antibacterial, roughly twice as strong as cotton, and softens with wear; creases evolve into a lived-in texture, and dry cleaning won't shrink or stiffen it. Priced at $439 AUD, it costs above comparable shirts from Angelo ($399) and BONDI BORN ($280), reflecting its bias-cut construction and relaxed tailoring. The main tradeoffs are the premium price and potential color fading due to undisclosed dye quality, but the shirt compensates with natural cooling, durability, and a freedom of movement that builds character over time.

Deep Research
The Melbourne design approach behind the label
- ET AL began in 1987 as knitwear label SHOW.ROOM before opening its first store in 2006, giving the brand over 35 years of textile expertise that underpins the refined workmanship and construction details in pieces like the Lyker Shirt.
- The menswear line was added in 2013 because male clients were asking for it, meaning the Lyker Shirt is designed for real male proportions and tastes, not a marketing-department initiative — a detail that speaks to the brand's responsive, customer-shaped approach.
- ET AL's self-described aesthetic of 'relaxed tailoring worked back with the fluidity of soft drapery' explains the Lyker Shirt's bias-cut yoke and linen fluidity — it's a house code that prioritizes ease and movement over stiff formality.
- ET AL designed the staff wardrobe for Melbourne's Vue De Monde, Shannon Bennett's two-hatted restaurant, in 2017 — a project that implies the brand's garments are trusted to perform in a high-end, physically demanding environment where both aesthetic and durability are critical.
Why the bias-cut yoke matters
- Cutting the woven linen on the bias introduces a diagonal stretch that allows the yoke to flex with the shoulder’s movement, providing give without synthetic elastane that would compromise linen’s breathable character—this is the core functional reason the bias-cut yoke makes a rigid fabric feel forgiving across the back.
Linen breathability, texture, and aging
- Flax fibers have inherently low elastic recovery so the shirt wrinkles easily, but that creasing is a feature rather than a flaw: as the fabric relaxes over time, wrinkles soften from sharp creases into a mellow, lived-in texture that’s widely read as effortless sophistication, not negligence.
- Linen’s softening is a result of fiber relaxation through repeated flexing, not breakdown; the long, highly crystalline cellulose chains bend and settle over time without losing strength, so the shirt’s drape becomes more fluid and comfortable with every wear, even if it’s only dry cleaned.
- Linen’s hollow, tubular flax fibers create a natural capillary network that actively circulates air and water vapor; the shirt’s cooling effect is passive and built into the fabric itself, with trapped air buffering temperature and continuous moisture escape keeping the wearer noticeably cooler than cotton or synthetics in summer heat.
- Research has documented a ‘lack of allergic activity’ in linen and demonstrated antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, so the shirt is intrinsically gentle on sensitive skin and stays fresh longer — a benefit that comes from the raw fiber’s phenolic compounds, retained as long as the linen hasn’t been aggressively bleached or chemically finished.
- The crystalline cellulose structure of flax gives it a tensile strength of 500–900 MPa — roughly double cotton’s — and, uniquely, linen becomes up to 30% stronger when damp; for the shirt, it resists tearing, withstands rough handling, and maintains seam integrity better than an equivalent cotton poplin.
How this shirt compares to other linen options
- The Lyker's bias-cut yoke across the shoulders — a contoured detail cut on the diagonal for a softer drape — sets it apart from the construction of similarly priced shirts; the FLANNEL Kale Linen Shirt, for example, uses straight flat felled seams and a wide body hem for a more rugged, utilitarian finish, emphasizing the Lyker's dressed-up shirting personality.
- The Lyker Shirt Yl's $439 price places it at the high end of short-sleeve linen shirts offered to Australian buyers, surpassing the Frescobol Carioca Angelo at $399 and the BONDI BORN Leiden at $280 — a margin that reflects a more considered, tailored construction rather than volume-based design.

Q&A
1 answered- Since the care instruction is dry clean only, how durable is the linen over repeated dry cleaning cycles — will it stiffen, wrinkle, or lose color?
- Linen is one of the most durable natural fabrics[1], and professional dry cleaning won't cause the shrinkage you'd risk with home washing. Repeated dry cleaning shouldn't stiffen or weaken the cloth, though it also won't soften it the way laundering does; minor wrinkling is simply linen's nature. Color loss depends on the dye quality, which isn't published here.
