This 30ml fragrance features notes of oud, hashish, tobacco, and coffee, presented in a bottle with a burnt oak wood lid and Italian packaging. User reviews highlight its strong performance and versatility, noting it is more wearable than its reputation suggests, though the cannabis-like accord may not suit conservative environments.

Product Insights

Black Afgano, NASOMATTO's 2009 extrait de parfum, is a genre-defining dark-resinous niche scent built as a synthetic hashish accord—no cannabis or THC—on woody-amber and incense materials, opening bitter-green, warming balsamic, and finishing incense-oud and amber. Its core promise is a one-to-two-spray, unisex, surprisingly wearable smoke that persists 10-12 hours on skin and into the next day on wool, denim, or silk, marked by a burnt-oak Italian cap and composition by ex-Versace perfumer Alessandro Gualtieri. The tradeoff: current bottles are reformulated to a weaker, shorter 5-6 hour wear with gray-blue juice instead of the original black, no public batch-code lookup exists, so it is not a safe blind buy and the 308 AUD/30ml price is a weaker deal than it was; it also requires testing for staining, may trigger EU allergens, and costs far more than a 91%-matching clone, while owners split on office wear and some liken it to Armani.

Verified claims

Reformulation
Buyers report current bottles last 5–6h with weaker projection and density, not the original's 10+ hours.
Visual identifier
Older batches ran super black; current bottles may be gray-blue — a reformulation tell, not a fake.
Blind buy
Community says not a safe blind buy; sample the exact batch, since older reviews may describe a different formula.
Batch verification
Nasomatto has no public batch-code lookup; vintage hunting falls to authorized stockists, the cap, and juice color.
Fabric wear
Buyers report the extrait lasting into the next day and beyond on wool, denim, or silk.
Cost per wear
AUD 308 for 30ml is a weaker deal at today's 5–6h wear than on the original's 10+ hours.
Composition
The listed hash note is a synthetic accord with no cannabis or THC, built on woody-amber and incense materials.
Scent development
Opens bitter-green and herbal, warms to balsamic, finishes incense-oud and amber.
Concept
Aims for hashish's temporary bliss, not a literal scent — buyers split on whether it reads as weed.
Wearability
Buyers find it surprisingly wearable — some liken it to Armani, though others call it perfume art.
Occasions
Most owners reserve it for cold-weather evenings; office use is split.
Community status
2009 cult classic defined dark-resinous niche; still a genre-defining community benchmark.
Alternative scents
Closest clone Fragrenza Black Oud hits 91% structural match from US$9.99
Extrait concentration
Extrait de parfum runs 20–40% oil; EDP dupes need 3–5 sprays to match its one-to-two-spray presence
Dose guidance
One spray to the chest by day, two for evenings, never three indoors.
Scent construction
The drydown smoke is sustained by synthetic woody-amber and incense materials.
Wear technique
One spray on pulse points, no rubbing, lets the green-to-amber arc unfold over hours.
Performance
Buyers report about 10–12 hours on skin and days on fabric
Staining
Dark extrait with synthetic dyes can mark light fabrics; test first
Dose control
One to two sprays on pulse points; three is too much indoors
Layering
Layers over pure oud oil; a soft musk overlay softens the smoke
Craftsmanship
The burnt-oak cap, made in Italy, is a tactile preview of the smoky scent
Office wear
Buyers are split on office wear: some wear it to work, others rule it out over cannabis and intensity.
Fabric persistence
On wool, denim or silk the extrait carries into the next day.
Unisex
Positioned as unisex: suitable for both women and men, dark, smoky and resinous.
Application
One to two sprays on pulse points is the full dose; don't rub.
Perfumer background
Composed by Alessandro Gualtieri, ex-Versace, Helmut Lang and Diesel, after he left industrial perfumery.
Design philosophy
The mad-nose ethos: emotion over photorealism, with notes withheld after six years chasing hashish bliss.
Brand line
Nasomatto dark-smoky flagship; Pardon is its closest sibling and Orto Parisi Bergamask its mainstream parallel.
Packaging
Burnt oak cap made in Italy mirrors the smoky scent; all packaging is Italian.
Authenticity cues
Without a public batch-code lookup, the burnt-oak cap and packaging are the recognized authenticity cues.
Allergens
Seven EU fragrance allergens declared; patch test advised for sensitive skin.

Uses

Apply to pulse points

Spray Black Afgano onto pulse points such as the wrists, the dip of the collarbone, the nape of the neck, or the chest, and let it settle on the skin without rubbing.[1,2,3,4]

Spray on a jacket or scarf

Spray the inside of a jacket or scarf, testing an inconspicuous area first because the dark oils can leave marks.[5]

Layer with oud or musk

Layer Black Afgano with a high-quality, pure oud oil such as Anfasic's Emarati Oud or Khaltat's Shay Oud, or spray a premium musk like Emarati Musk over the application.[2]

  • First impressions: surprisingly wearable and designer-like

It just smells like a good crowd pleasing almost type of designer scent to me. Not bad at all, but nothing shock factor really overall. It didn't appear opaque or heavy, but rather as expected. I think Black Afgano is a relatively easy wear and no one would really bat an eye at you wearing it to the office and such, in a negative way. Could be released under Armani or something and do well.

  • Expectation vs reality: unremarkable and safe, compared to Dunhill Icon Absolute

I spent so long building up BA in my mind that it's difficult to know whether it's actually that safe and boring, or whether my expectations were just too high. I avoided it for a while, figuring I needed to be "more advanced", all the while smelling dozens of more unique and challenging scents. By the time I finally worked my way up to BA, I found it completely unremarkable. To me, it's like an even safer version of Dunhill Icon Absolute which I've shamelessly worn to work before haha.

  • Perfume art not meant for daily wear; limited occasions

It is perfume art. I don't think it was ever meant to be worn, at least, I am yet to figure out, when and where. Definitely not for work, i.e. cannabis. Not really for dating either, i.e. cannabis. Absolutely not for summer as its nuclear. Maybe during winter time when by yourself, in front of a fire with a single malt in your hand.

  • An outdated classic with top-notch performance

An old classic. Pretty outdated by todays standard but the performance has always been top notch
