Product Insights

The Geo Trench Gf is an exclusive, drape-first duster from ET AL — a micro-edition of only eight coats worldwide, with one black unit remaining — designed by Project Runway Australia winner Anthony Capon and rooted in the label's relaxed tailoring since 1987. Its core promise is fluid, sculptural layering: a 50/50 rayon-polyester shell over acetate twill gives soft body, wrinkle resistance, and breathability, while an ankle-length column with asymmetric collar, diagonal hem, and side splits moves freely; a removable self-belt either defines the waist or opens the line. Built as a three-season, uninsulated layer for spring, autumn, cool evenings, and air-conditioned spaces, it layers over tunics and knits without distortion. The tradeoffs are explicit: it is not a winter coat, is dry-clean only (though steamable), and the bronze option reads as warm matte earth, not metallic — a deliberate collector's departure from the brand's black core. The label is not trend-driven, making this a multi-year, scarcity-driven investment piece.

Verified claims

Scarcity
Only 8 coats exist worldwide — 6 black, 2 bronze — a true micro-edition.
Last unit
Only 1 of 6 black units remains in stock — the limited run won't be restocked.
Color
Bronze is a warm matte earth tone, not iridescent metallic.
Designer lineage
Designed by Anthony Capon, winner of Project Runway Australia Season 2.
Provenance
ET AL began as the Doughtys' 1987 SHOW.ROOM knitwear label; about half is made in Melbourne.
Design DNA
The Geo Trench directly expresses ET AL's signature relaxed tailoring and fluid drapery.
Silhouette
Removable self-belt is the only closure: tied it defines the waist; open, the diagonal hem and side splits keep volume moving.
Material
50/50 rayon-polyester shell over an acetate twill lining drapes fluidly, resists wrinkles and must be dry-cleaned.
Fit
A lined but uninsulated layer for spring and autumn days, cool evenings, and air-conditioned spaces — not a winter coat.
Fabric hand
Soft fluid drape with body, resists creasing, and stays breathable in mild weather.
Drape
Ankle-length open column — 33 in armpit-to-armpit, 47 in length — moves at side splits.
Lining
Smooth acetate twill lining glides over layers and sits comfortably on bare arms.
Care
Dry-clean only; (P) code allows any standard solvent, and steaming refreshes between cleans.
Finish luster
Bronze's tone comes from rayon's silk-like sheen, not a metallic coating.
Bronze positioning
Bronze is a deliberate collector departure from ET AL's black-monochrome core.
Seasonality
The breathable, non-sticky shell extends wear from spring through early autumn.
Temperature range
Spring, autumn and early-summer duster — breathable, not a winter coat.
Layering
Extreme one-size volume layers over tunics, knits, and jackets without distorting the outer line, a capsule building block.
Seasonal range
Uninsulated duster suits spring and autumn, cool evenings and air-conditioned spaces, not deep winter.
Timelessness
Et Al describes the label as not trend-driven, making this a multi-year rather than seasonal buy.
Seasonal wear
A three-season duster that shakes out wrinkles and drapes open over layers.
Occasion
Race-week statement duster in a micro-run of 8 — not a winter coat.
Asymmetric cut
Asymmetric collar-and-hem cut is a drape-first line; 47-inch hem and side splits keep the stride free.

Redditors report the georipper is a useful labor-saving trencher in soft soil but is plagued by high maintenance and poor performance in rocky or hard ground.

Sentiment is mixed: some users praise the productivity gains in suitable conditions, while many criticize the tool's durability, maintenance requirements, and ineffectiveness in rocky soil.

Use Cases

  • Irrigation system installations (heads, valve boxes), landscape lighting, tight space trenching, short PVC runs, metal edging

Watch Out For

In soft soil it can replace two workers, but in hard soil it may not be faster.

Source Threads

  • Durability and soil suitability concerns

We have 2 rippers. They are nice for some things. Ours are always broke down. The drive sprockets and digging chains wear out fast. I'd stay away from rocky gravel heavy soil. Works well in sand and ground cover

    u/AwkwardFactor84View thread →

  • Productivity gains for irrigation installs

I keep one on the install truck, and two float between techs. Install truck uses it to dig out heads, valve boxes, and areas the puller doesn't fit. One guy with a georipper does what I used to pay 2 guys with shovels to do on most installs. Techs float them between trucks based on need, repairing damaged systems, etc where a puller or full sized trencher would be overkill.

  • Limitations in hard ground and maintenance issues

We have 2 rippers. They are great for certain things. However, they see not ideal for root heavy, rocky, or really hard ground. Expect to go through a lot of digging chains and sprockets as well.
