Product Insights

The Shola S/s Shirt Ss by ET AL, designed under Anthony Capon (Project Runway Australia winner, leading since 2008), is a premium 100% linen shirt that prioritizes breathability and movement through a bias-cut yoke delivering stretch and fluid drape—offset stripes at the seams are deliberate design, not flaws. Linen's hollow fibers wick sweat, absorb 20% of their weight in moisture, and dry faster than cotton, keeping you cooler than cotton or polyester. The tradeoff: at 429 AUD it matches Eton's linen shirt pricing and sits well above Nomad's, while the pure flax fabric wrinkles easily, requires dry cleaning (with airing between wears to reduce frequency), and the diagonal yoke stripes intentionally don't align with the body stripes—a detail that may read as irregular but is the point.

Verified claims

Designer pedigree
Project Runway Australia winner Anthony Capon has led ET AL since 2008.
Price context
At 429 AUD it matches Eton's $280 USD linen-shirt price, ~$260 above Nomad's $169 linen shirt.
Bias-cut yoke
The bias-cut yoke gives stretch and fluid drape, and the offset stripes at its seams are deliberate, not flaws.
Cooling performance
Linen's hollow fibers wick sweat and let air move, keeping you cooler than cotton or polyester.
Material
100% linen, not a blend — full flax-fiber breathability and easy wrinkling.
Linen cooling
Linen's hollow flax fibers breathe, absorb 20% of its weight in moisture, and dry faster than cotton.
Care
Dry clean only; airing between wears can limit how often it needs cleaning.
Stripe alignment
In FOREST STRIPE the bias-cut yoke stripes run diagonally and deliberately don't align with the body stripes.
Bias-cut fit
The bias-cut 100% linen yoke stretches with movement and drapes more softly than straight-cut linen.

Deep Research

Why the bias-cut yoke matters for fit and drape

  • Because woven fibers only stretch meaningfully when pulled on the diagonal, cutting the yoke at a 45-degree angle turns a rigid linen shoulder panel into a zone that gives up to a few millimetres under load — enough to prevent the tight, binding pull across the upper back whenever you stretch forward or grip a steering wheel.
  • Cutting the yoke on the bias softens the way the 100% linen falls from the neck, replacing boxy corner-tension with a subtle fluidity that keeps the shirt looking intentionally relaxed rather than stiff — a small tailoring choice that elevates the entire garment’s silhouette.

How the price compares to similar linen shirts

  • The Shola's bias-cut yoke — a labour-intensive detail that cuts fabric on the diagonal and increases material waste — is rarely found in sub-$300 linen shirts; this construction alone can justify a meaningful portion of the price premium over simpler flat-yoke shirts, such as Nomad's Dune.
  • Helmed by Project Runway Australia winner Anthony Capon, ET AL has a cult following built on androgynous, detail-driven designs and garment washes; the Shola shirt inherits this designer premium, placing it in a different category from anonymous label-free linen shirts.
  • Venroy, another Australian premium brand, offers a 85% linen / 15% silk blend shirt at $250 — $179 below the Shola — showing that even within the elevated Australian designer segment, the ET AL shirt commands a significant premium, likely for its pure-linen composition and avant-garde pattern-making.
  • A 100% French Linen, OEKO-TEX certified shirt from Nomad the Label costs just $169, less than half the Shola's price; the $260 gap highlights that the Shola's premium is anchored in its bias-cut construction and designer label rather than raw linen quality, since both use flax-based fabric.
  • Swedish luxury shirting house Eton retails its pure-linen shirt at $280 USD, which, converted, sits around $420 AUD — nearly identical to the Shola's $429, confirming that the shirt is priced to compete with international premium labels, not Australian high-street linen.

How the 100% linen fabric feels in warm weather

  • Because linen dries faster than cotton, any sweat this shirt does pick up will evaporate rapidly, so you won't be left with a damp, clingy shirt after sitting down or moving indoors.
  • Linen's fibers are naturally hollow, which means this shirt moves air through the fabric and pulls moisture away from your skin quickly — a mechanical cooling effect that keeps you drier and cooler than cotton (which holds water) or polyester (which traps heat).
  • The loose, naturally open structure of linen fibers creates a continuous ventilation effect — this shirt won't trap body heat, keeping you cool even when fully buttoned up.
  • Using 100% linen — not a blend — removes any trade-off between cooling and wrinkle resistance, giving this shirt the full breathability of bare flax fibers that style guides recommend for the hottest days.
  • Linen can absorb up to 20% of its own weight in moisture before feeling wet, so this shirt resists that sticky, soaked-through sensation far longer into a humid day than a typical cotton shirt.

Q&A

2 answered
Can the Shola shirt be hand-washed gently at home, or is dry cleaning strictly required?
The care label states Dry Clean Only (P), so dry cleaning is the specified method — gentle hand-washing at home isn't recommended.
In the FOREST STRIPE colorway, do the stripes align across the bias-cut yoke seams, or are they intentionally offset?
Because the yoke is bias-cut, the yoke stripes are set on the diagonal while the body stripes run straight, so they won't line up at the seams — this offset is an intentional design detail.
